SMD Resistor Code

Surface-mount resistors use compact markings instead of color bands. Decode 3-digit, 4-digit, R-notation, and EIA-96 codes to resistance values, or find the markings for any resistance.

How It Works

3-digit code (±5% parts): two significant figures plus a multiplier digit. 472 = 47 × 10² = 4.7 kΩ.

4-digit code (±1% parts): three significant figures plus a multiplier. 4702 = 470 × 10² = 47 kΩ.

R notation: R marks the decimal point for values below 10 Ω (or below 100 Ω in 4-digit form). 4R7 = 4.7 Ω, R047 = 0.047 Ω (current-sense).

EIA-96 (±1% parts, small packages): two digits index the 96 E96 values (01 = 100, 96 = 976) and a letter gives the multiplier: Z = ×0.001, Y/R = ×0.01, X/S = ×0.1, A = ×1, B/H = ×10, C = ×100, D = ×1k, E = ×10k, F = ×100k. So 01C = 100 × 100 = 10 kΩ.
